Law Library Access & Services: Find & Borrow

Circulation Policies

General Information

  • Circulation services are available to Detroit Mercy Law students and faculty only.
  • Books and other materials will not be mailed.
  • All books checked out to law students are due on the last day of the semester.
  • If there are no pending Hold Requests, checked out books may be renewed once, either in person, by telephone, or via email. Subsequent renewals must be in person, with the item being presented to library staff at the Circulation Desk. Reserve items cannot be renewed.

Reserves

Reserve materials must be requested from the Circulation Desk and may only be used in the Library. Items can be checked out for up to 3 hours and must be returned to the Circulation Desk upon leaving the library. Removing Reserve materials from the library may result in a suspension of borrowing privileges.

Students are encouraged to use the many Reserve materials available electronically through the Aspen Learning Library, Westlaw, Lexis, VitalLaw, and other databases accessible remotely. Contact the library if you need assistance finding Reserve materials online.

Item Holds

Current students and faculty may use Murphy catalog to find titles and place Hold Requests on circulating materials. Please note that Reserve items must be used in the Library—Hold Requests cannot be placed. Library staff will retrieve the requested item from the shelves and you will receive an email notifying you when the material is ready for pickup. Items can be picked up from the Circulation Desk. For assistance, email lawlibaccess@udmercy.edu .

New Titles

The Law Library updates its collection on an ongoing basis by acquiring legal monographs, subscribing to new legal databases, and purchasing other items as needed. To suggest a purchase, please email us at lawlibrary@udmercy.edu.

Current and archived acquisition lists are posted on the library's LibGuide platform.

Interlibrary Loan

Students and faculty may submit an Interlibrary Loan request to borrow materials not in the Law Library's collection. The Library will make every attempt to procure materials from other institutions, but borrowing is dependent upon the schedules and policies of the lending libraries.

Faculty Requests

Faculty requests for books and articles can be sent to lawlibrary@udmercy.edu. The Library will notify you once the requested materials have been compiled. Materials may be picked up from the library or delivered to an office in Dowling Hall. Electronic materials will be delivered via email.
