Finding Articles on Healthcare Cost and Quality in PubMed

PubMed offers pre-set filters to help you limit your search to hsa results.  To get there, follow these steps:

  1. Go to PubMed.

  2. Look at the middle of the page, under the heading that says "PubMed Tools," and click on the link for "Topic Specific Queries".
  3. Click on the link for "Health Services Research (HSR) Queries". This will help focus your search on administrative versus clinical topics.                                                                    .
  4.  Type some search terms into the search box and choose a category.  For example, if you're looking for evidence to see cost effective ways to reduce the impact of the homeless persons who don't need treatment, try entering terms such as "emergency room" and "homeless".                                                   .
  5. To limit your results to evidence-based articles, look to the upper left corner, under the heading that says "Article Types"  Click on the "Customize" link.                                           .
  6. Check "Systematic Reviews", "Meta-Analysis", and any other category you want to include.  Then click on the "Show" button. This step will make the limits visible, but won't apply them.       .
  7.  Click on the limits for the article types that you want.
  8. Look to the upper right hand corner and click on the "UDetroit Mercy" link to see articles that you can read for free.  If you have time (one to three weeks), you can order other articles through interlibrary loan.       .
